So thanks for that tip! I suppose drive on analog emulation plugins is now a consideration I hadn't thought of before.īut if the distortion introduced by the SSL is so quiet as to be inaudible, how do people perceive its character? Are people actually able to hear things happening at -85 db or are we saying that the inaudible distortion has an audible effect on the sound? The G-Channel LEDs were glowing red the whole time, which I instinctively abhor, but I have heard that unlike digital, overdriving analog gear can be a desirable thing since it brings out the character. I tried driving driving the G-Channel by 16 db before the plugin, followed by a 16 db attenuation so that it continues to sum with the reverse phase track and it did make the difference audible with an RMS of about -45. This is what I'm attempting to find here. I've been trying not to call BS and persist with the assumption that I'm just not hearing it yet. I've seen Youtube videos of people just turning the strip (or any such analog emulator) on with it in a default state and gush at subtleties I just couldn't hear. Yes, I had the impression from various forums that a good part of this and other emulation plugins' value is simply having the signal flow through it without touching anything. I can also clearly hear that the difference when I flip the Analog switch on is added noise.īut if the distortion introduced by the SSL is so quiet as to be inaudible, how do people perceive its character? Are people actually able to hear things happening at -85 db or are we saying that the inaudible distortion has an audible effect on the sound? If so, why didn't that show up in the audible range on my spectrum analyzer? And is there a way to scientifically isolate its impact on the sound? Yes, it's very interesting and I do think the distortion is pleasing. I added a utility on the Master track and cranked the Gain until I could hear it. My problem is that this signal is inaudible. Indeed the Spectrum Analyzer does show a signal, so the G-Channel is clearly coloring the signal.

Now the entire track should cancel out except for any differences between the two busses. Added a Spectrum Analyzer and bx_meter on the master track. I didn't modify any parameters on the channel strip.ģ. Loaded SSL G-Channel on this track, since it's the one that's supposed to have the more obvious distortion. Copied the clip to another track with original phase. Loaded a commercially released song in one Ableton track. I'm using a pair of KRK Rokit 5 monitors. Now I'm trying to listen for it so I can understand the reason for its appreciation, but I can't. I just bought the Waves SSL 4000 Collection on sale after reading so much praise for its character.
